Tropical Biplane's WACO flies over Kauai
Our WACO YMF5C
Our WACO YMF
Tropical Biplane's WACO YMF Super is a modern interpretation of the classic biplane. It arrived here in Kaua'i, brand new from the WACO Classic Aircraft factory, in September 2002 (you may want to see the story of the plane's construction and arrival in Kaua'i). Our lovely red, white, and blue airplane is a totally up-date-aircraft, not a refurbished antique, and is fully certified by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The YMF Super is specifically designed to carry a pilot and two passengers. While the pilot operates the controls from the aft cockpit, our passengers sit side-by-side in the cozy, yet comfortable front cockpit. We provide each passenger with a nostalgic cloth helmet and goggles, along with a modern headset that provides continuous two-way communications with the pilot.
Our WACO offers an unrivaled sightseeing platform. Its front cockpit sits below the upper wing, so our passengers are always in the shade, but is also ahead of the lower wing, providing an unobstructed view of Kaua'i's spectacular sights. The WACO's big biplane wings and powerful Jacobs engine allow for a wonderfully smooth, stable ride that will delight sightseers and photographers alike.
The WACO YMF Super, despite its classic appearance, is a thoroughly modern aircraft. These words, from WACO Classic Aircraft Corporation, explain:
"In 1983, the founders of Classic Aircraft Corporation envisioned many childhood dreams coming true with the reincarnation of the WACO YMF. In the history of aviation, no company had ever taken a fifty-year-old design and manufactured it new under the original FAA type certificate. To accomplish this mission, Classic hired experienced engineering talent from Piper, Taylorcraft and Ford. While maintaining the sanctity of WACO's incredible design, this team of proven professionals modernized the aircraft with over 300 engineering changes, redrew over 1400 drawings, and built new tooling for production. This is not a rebuild or a kit plane, but a brand new FAA certified production aircraft. Product improvements such as the use of sturdy 4130 steel for the fuselage frame, instead of the outdated mild steel construction, modern hydraulic toe brakes, and the latest avionics are all consistent with the types of quality features one would expect of a brand new aircraft.
"The first WACO YMF Classic rolled off the assembly line and received FAA certification under the original WACO type certificate in March of 1986. Over 5000 labour hours of fine craftmanship hand-built into each aircraft has resulted in the WACO YMF being described as an aeronautic thoroughbred. In 1991, the first WACO YMF Super was introduced, offering the modern-day barnstormer some additional improvements, such as more internal width, more legroom, increased useful load, a longer fuselage, a balanced rudder and larger front entry door. Since the delivery of the first WACO, the assembly line and the compliments have continued to roll. Acceptance of the WACO is global. Delivery to new owners in Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Australia and the Caribbean has been greeted with unabashed enthusiasm for craftmanship, quality, and the pure fun of true flying."

Cessna 182 Skylane is the largest and most comfortable fixed wing aircraft currently flying over Kauai on sightseeing rides. The 182 Skylane flies the same routes as the WACO Biplane and offers the same personal charter type rides. The 182 Skylane can carry 2 or 3 passengers in complete comfort and has a large enclosed cabin which has very little size or weight restrictions. Every passenger is guaranteed a window seat and personal interaction with their pilot and guide.
